Letter from Rabbi Glasser

Dear YIPC,

I am writing to share very important information regarding our process for this year's Mechiras Chametz. Please take the time to read through the entire email.

There are so many moments throughout this ordeal that stand in contrast to our normative religious life experience. Our family's entire life is built around the rhythms of the YIPC shul experience, and we feel a true void with not being able to interact with you directly. I know that Pesach preparations, in general, are stressful and overwhelming - but I must admit something to you. The experience of engaging personally in the process of Mechiras Chametz is one of the highlights of our year. It provides a chance to "check in" with those who perhaps are less interactive in shul or beyond. It gives us a chance to look into each other's eyes and wish a Chag Kasher VeSmayach with both heart and soul. And of course, it gives us a chance to engage in one of the most inspiring aspects of preparing for Pesach - the "lifting of the pen".

This year, we will not have the occasion to meet in person. It is crucial that we all avoid as much contact as possible, in order to prevent the further spread of COVID-19. Therefore, an arrangement has been made to do this online - as an exception for this year. In these circumstances - this is the ideal approach, and I will not be accepting any delivered printouts of the form, as that would be halachically compromising of our obligation to safeguard our health and wellbeing at this time.

The form for our shul can be found here, please fill it out in its entirety.

For those who cannot fill out the form, please appoint someone (over the phone) to fill in the information on your behalf. If you cannot find someone, then please be in touch with myself directly and we will work out a solution.

For many years, I have continued Rabbi Wasserman's tradition of convening a Beis Din in our Shul, to sell our Chametz to a non jew. We will not be doing so this year, as many shuls are working together to minimize the number of sales which need to take place and minimize social contact as much as possible. As such, you will find that the form appoints myself, and Rav Mordechai Willig; a renowned Posek, a personal rebbe, and one of the Moreh Derech of YBH - with the authorization to sell your Chametz on your behalf. This form will be operational until 11:59 PM, Monday April 6. Please fill it out in advance of that date and time.

Many of you take our Mechiras Chametz meeting as an opportunity to provide funds for Maos Chitim. I invite you to visit our Shul website https://www.yipc.org/form/MaosChitimFund.html to do at this time as well. There are many people struggling financially with making Pesach this year. If you are in a position to be of financial assistance, please give generously.

Rav Willig encouraged us all to add a word to our traditional wishes for a wonderful Pesach - so in that spirit, our family wishes each and every one of you, a Chag Bari (healthy) Kasher VeSamaich
